I was looking through a blog that reviews episodes of House, and it has each season up, with each episode, all numbered accordingly. Season 1, for example, has 16 episodes. Why then were there 24 episodes in season 2? Is there any reason why different seasons of TV shows (not just House) have more episodes than others? Does it have anything to do with the writer's strike?

Thanks in advance

P.S. The blog is Polite Dissent and it's awesome

[Edit to add] I was basing the # of episodes off of the person's blog that I linked. Big mistake! According to IMDB, season 1 had 22 episodes; season 2 had 24; season 3 had 24; season 4 had 16; season 5 has had 19 (so far.) I apologize for any confusion.
